Apartments.com Rental Search is a free mobile app for finding rental properties across the United States. It is available on Google Play and the App Store, has been downloaded millions of times, and is supported by ads and optional in-app purchases. The app is designed to help renters search listings, compare prices, and contact property managers from a phone.

Once you open the app, you can browse apartments, houses, and condos by city, ZIP code, or current location. Filters let you narrow results by rent range, number of bedrooms, pet policy, and move-in date. I found the map view especially handy because it shows nearby listings while you scroll through photos. Saving favorites and setting up alerts also works well, and you can message landlords or schedule tours directly inside the app.

In terms of competition, Apartments.com sits somewhere between Zillow and Realtor.com in scope, though its rental focus feels more concentrated. The layout is cleaner than some older rental sites, and the listing details are generally consistent. One thing I noticed is that smaller markets sometimes have fewer listings than on competing platforms, but the overall search experience is still smooth and reliable.

• The search filters are detailed without being overwhelming. You can quickly adjust price, size, and amenities, and results update almost instantly.
• The map-based browsing feels more natural than list-only apps. Tapping a pin opens a preview card with rent, photos, and contact options.
• Saved searches and alerts are genuinely useful. I set one for a specific neighborhood and received updates without checking manually every day.
• Compared with Zillow, the rental-specific interface here feels less cluttered. Listings are easier to scan, though Zillow still has broader coverage in some areas.

• It saves time when comparing multiple neighborhoods in one session.
• Direct messaging keeps conversations with landlords in one place.
• Photo galleries and floor plans help you rule out places before visiting.
• Alerts reduce the need to refresh listings constantly.

• Some listings repeat across platforms, so you may see the same unit more than once.
• Certain features, like premium placement, can push paid listings to the top.
• Smaller cities sometimes have limited inventory compared with larger sites.
• The app occasionally shows ads that interrupt browsing, though not too often.
