Expert Review

I've been using Skype for Business on my Android phone for a few years now, ever since my company switched over to it for internal communications. It's basically Microsoft's professional version of the regular Skype app, designed specifically for work. The app is used for instant messaging, making voice and video calls, and joining online meetings with colleagues. It first launched a while back, and you can easily find and download it from the Google Play Store. It has millions of installs, which makes sense given how many businesses rely on Microsoft's ecosystem. The app itself is free to install, but you typically need an account provided by your workplace or school to actually sign in and use it. Once you're in, the core features for chatting and calling are included, so there's no need for in-app purchases. I haven't noticed any annoying ads popping up, which is great for a work-focused tool.

Using the app is pretty straightforward. After you install it and log in with your work credentials, your contact list automatically syncs with your organization's directory. I use it daily to send quick messages to teammates or to jump on a call when an email would take too long. A useful tip is to set your status accurately—like "In a meeting" or "Away"—so people know when you're available. For meetings, you can join either by audio or with your camera on. The interface is clean, and switching between chats, calls, and your calendar is simple.

Compared to other similar apps like Slack or even the consumer version of Skype, I stick with Skype for Business because it's fully integrated with my work email (Outlook) and calendar. Everything is in one place. While Slack might have more fun features for team collaboration, Skype for Business feels more secure and official for corporate communication. It handles large company meetings reliably, which is why my organization chose it over other options available on Google Play.

Key Functional Highlights

  • 🔒 Integrated Security & Sign-On: Logging in is seamless with my company's credentials. Unlike some other apps where you create a separate account, this app uses my existing work login, which feels more secure and is much more convenient.
  • 📅 Direct Outlook Calendar Integration: This is a huge time-saver. The app shows my upcoming meetings right on the main screen, and I can join them with one tap. Other apps often require separate calendar apps or manual links.
  • 👥 Organizational Directory Search: Finding colleagues is effortless. I can search for anyone in my company by name without needing to know their exact username or send a friend request first, which isn't always the case in similar apps.
  • 🎤 Reliable Meeting Audio/Video: For online meetings, the audio and video quality is consistently stable, even with many participants. It's more dependable for critical work calls compared to some other free meeting apps you can download.

Advantages & Benefits

  • ✅ Deep Microsoft 365 Integration: It works perfectly with my Outlook email and OneDrive, making file sharing during chats super easy. Google Meet or Zoom don't tie into my work tools as natively.
  • ✅ Enterprise-Grade Management: My IT department can manage the app and enforce policies, which gives a sense of security you don't always get with consumer-grade apps like regular Skype.
  • ✅ Familiar Interface: If you've used other Microsoft apps, this one feels instantly familiar, reducing the learning curve compared to adopting a completely new platform like Slack.

Areas for Improvement

  • ⚠️ Limited Third-Party App Connections: Unlike Slack, which has tons of integrations with other tools, this app is more closed. Adding project management bots or other automations isn't really possible.
  • ⚠️ Consumer Features Are Missing: Don't install this app expecting fun filters or stickers like in the regular Skype app. It's strictly for business, which can feel a bit dry.
  • ⚠️ Future Uncertainty: Microsoft is pushing 'Teams' as its main collaboration app now. This app might not get major new updates, which is a consideration before you decide to fully rely on it.
